Preventative dentistry

We could have caught almost every cavity we see earlier. Preventive care is the part of pediatric dentistry that does the most work — cleanings, sealants, fluoride, and six-month checkups that keep small problems small.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

A checkup here has five parts.

A visit runs about 45 minutes. Nothing on this list happens without your child being shown it first.

01

Exam

Dr. Gomez counts and checks every tooth, looks at the bite, and tracks how the jaw is growing against the last visit.

02

Cleaning

A soft polish to clear plaque a toothbrush misses. Your child picks the flavor.

03

Fluoride

A varnish painted on in about a minute. It hardens enamel and is the cheapest cavity prevention there is.

04

X-rays, only if needed

Digital images at the lowest dose, and only when we can’t see between teeth or need to check developing roots. Not every visit.

05

Coaching

Brushing and flossing practiced in the chair, plus honest talk about snacks, sports drinks, and thumb-sucking.

BY AGE

What prevention looks like at each stage.

Ages 0–3

Knee-to-knee exams

Your baby lies back into Dr. Gomez’s lap while you hold their hands. Short, calm, and mostly about teething, bottles, and getting a first brushing routine going.

Ages 4–12

Six-month checkups and sealants

The years cavities actually happen. New molars come in with deep grooves, so we seal them, and we watch the spots that tend to go first.

Teens

Prevention on their own terms

Braces, sports, and energy drinks all change the risk. We talk to your teen directly about whitening, mouthguards, and keeping their gums healthy.

Questions parents ask about prevention

Every six months for most kids. If we see early decay, a high-sugar diet, or braces going on, we may want to see your child every three or four months for a while.

Yes. We use digital x-rays at the lowest dose available and only take them when needed — not on a fixed schedule.

No. Sealants are painted on, not drilled in. No shot, no numbing needed.

Most plans cover two cleanings a year in full. We verify your specific benefits before your visit.

WHO YOU’LL SEE

Dr. Gomez does the checkup herself.

Every preventative visit ends with her sitting down with you — what she saw, what to watch, and what it costs — before you leave the room.
